Radiologists are doctors who are specially trained to analyse and interpret radiological images. The Radiologist will view the images obtained during your examination and provide a written report to your referring doctor with the results including a diagnosis and any appropriate recommendations for treatment or further follow up.
For some procedures you will meet the Radiologist he or she will take an active part in the examination, for others the Radiologist will not be present, but the Technologist performing your examination will always liaise with the Radiologist to ensure the highest quality examination is performed.
In addition to their medical training, Radiologists are required to undergo specialised post-graduate training in medical imaging and undergo continued training in the latest techniques, protocols and clinical standards.
Dr Peter Dixon
Peter is one of the founding members of Broadway Radiology which was set up in 1997. He has worked at Palmerston North Hospital since 1990, and was a partner in Mercy Radiology, the principal Radiology practice in the area for many years, under the directorship of Dr Lauretta Tan.
Peter was born and educated in England and obtained his medical degree at King’s College Hospital in London. He first worked in New Zealand as a House Surgeon and then as Surgical Registrar at Waikato Hospital. He returned to England to complete his FRCS in 1984, and then entered the Oxford Radiology training scheme. He gained extensive experience in the radiology subspecialities, and developed his interest in interventional and vascular radiology.
At Palmerston North Hospital, he has built up the angiography and interventional services and initiated vascular and musculoskeletal ultrasound, which are now essential tools. The great majority of percutaneous biopsies are now performed by Radiologists, using either ultrasound or CT. Peter has expertise in these techniques, and an increasing number of these procedures are being performed at Broadway Radiology.
The use of Doppler ultrasound for the assessment of varicose veins, and surgical planning and for guided sclerotherapy, has been one of his special interests. Patients are now referred from all over the central North Island for this technique.
The advent of Central MRI has brought a whole new set of interesting challenges to the radiologist, while allowing imaging of a range of anatomical areas not visible with other modalities. Peter is keen to take advantage of this excellent facility and enthusiastic staff to bring world-class imaging to your region.
Dr Quentin Reeves
After completing his radiology training in Auckland, Quentin spent a year at UCLA in 1990-91 as a fellow in musculo-skeletal imaging and MRI. He then spent seven years working in Sydney in both private practice and a teaching hospital. He has considerable experience in musculo-skeletal and spine MRI and the technique of MRI arthrography. He has a particular interest in shoulder imaging.
Quentin is now based in Auckland, but still has a strong interest in Palmerston North X-ray, providing regular cover both on-site and via teleradiology links.
