3D/4D Ultrasound
Broadway Radiology now offers 3D and 4D ultrasound. Compared to traditional 2 dimensional ultrasound images 3D and 4D ultrasound can allow the features of the unborn baby to be seen in more detail. Rather than simply showing the size and shape of the foetus, 3D images can show the unique facial and anatomical features of the baby.
The 4th dimension in 4D scanning is time, or motion. 4D ultrasound is moving 3D images. 3D ultrasound technology is useful for assessing foetal abnormalities such as cleft lip or club feet. The addition of 4D can greatly assist in the assessment of the foetal heart and movement. It can also demonstrate foetal behaviour such as yawning and eye opening.
The best time for obtaining optimum images of the baby is around 26-32 weeks, as this is the time where the baby has some subcutaneous fat, is still relatively high in the uterus and there is plenty of amniotic fluid surrounding it. The clarity of the images will depend on the position of the foetus and the placenta and the volume of fluid around the foetus.
3D and 4D has many other clinical applications beyond obstetric ultrasound, and may be used to assess anatomical structures and refine the diagnosis of many medical conditions.
To have a 3D/4D ultrasound to visualise your baby, you must be 26-34 weeks pregnant, and you must have had a full anatomy scan at 18-20 weeks. A referral is not necessary, bookings are essential. The cost is $185.00 for a 30 minute appointment and you will receive a 3D framed image and a DVD to take away with you.
